Planting Instructions (From a 3.5" Pot into the Ground)
Coreopsis is easy to transplant and establishes quickly in sunny locations.
1. Choose the Location
-
Select a spot in full sun.
-
Ensure soil drains well — coreopsis does not tolerate soggy conditions.
2. Prepare the Soil
-
Loosen soil 8–10 inches deep.
-
Mix in compost if soil is poor, but avoid overly rich soil (which can cause floppy growth).
3. Dig the Hole
-
Dig a hole twice as wide as the 3.5" pot.
-
Plant at the same depth it was growing in the container (crown level with soil).
4. Remove from Pot
-
Gently squeeze and slide the plant out.
-
Loosen circling roots if needed.
5. Plant
-
Place in the hole and backfill with soil.
-
Firm gently around the base.
6. Water Thoroughly
-
Water deeply after planting.
-
Keep evenly moist during the first few weeks.
7. Mulch
-
Apply a light layer of mulch to conserve moisture and suppress weeds (keep mulch away from the crown).
Overwintering Coreopsis ‘Solar Eclipse’
This perennial is hardy and generally low-maintenance in winter.
In-Ground Plants (Zones 4–9)
-
After the first hard frost, foliage may die back.
-
You can:
-
Cut stems down to 2–3 inches in late fall, or
-
Leave seed heads standing for winter interest and birds, then cut back in early spring.
-
-
Apply a light mulch layer in colder zones for added root protection.
In Containers
-
Move pots to a sheltered area out of harsh winter winds.
-
Ensure containers have good drainage.
-
Water occasionally if soil becomes completely dry (avoid waterlogging).
Coreopsis ‘Solar Eclipse’ is an easy-care, sun-loving perennial that brings bold color, pollinator activity, and long-lasting blooms to the garden. With proper drainage and sunlight, it will return reliably each year and often bloom even more vigorously in its second season.
