Juncus effusus, commonly known as Soft Rush, is a versatile ornamental grass-like perennial prized for its upright, cylindrical green stems that add texture and vertical interest to garden beds, rain gardens, and water features. Naturally found in wetland areas, it’s ideal for poorly drained soils, pond edges, or low-lying spots. Soft Rush forms dense, fountain-like clumps that remain attractive year-round and require little maintenance once established.

      • Choose a moist site with poor to average drainage, such as pond edges, rain gardens, or wet meadows

      • Dig a hole slightly wider than the pot and the same depth as the root ball

      • Place the plant so the crown is level with the surrounding soil

      • Backfill and water thoroughly; keep soil consistently moist

      • Ideal spacing is 12–18 inches apart for natural clumping

      • No pruning required—cut back old stems in late winter or early spring if desired for a fresh look

Juncus 'Soft Rush' is an ideal low-maintenance solution for soggy spots, adding vertical elegance and natural texture to landscapes where few other plants thrive.

***We recommend that you wait 7 to 10 days from the date of receipt before repotting your plants, to allow them to recover from the shock of shipping***

Exercise caution and use your best judgment before ordering during unusually hot or cold weather (below 32 degrees F, or in excess of 95F for shipping purposes), as these extremes may leave your plant vulnerable to damage. The optimal time for planting for most of our material is in mid to late spring, past the danger of hard frost. Please refer to our preferred shipping and planting guide for your area below.

Sometimes these plants are small, like the pictures. Sometimes they will be larger, depending on crop rotation. No plants are shipped from our farm until fully rooted.

Our unique, innovative packaging ensures your order arrives in excellent condition. We recommend that you place your order according to the ideal planting time for your growing zone (see estimated dates below).
