Tropical Storm Elephant Ears is a bold, compact colocasia prized for its dramatic, high-contrast foliage. Each heart-shaped leaf features a deep charcoal-purple to nearly black center framed by creamy white to light green margins, creating a striking “storm cloud” effect. Unlike larger elephant ear varieties, this cultivar stays more manageable in size, making it perfect for borders, patio containers, or as a focal point in smaller garden beds. Its lush, tropical look instantly elevates any landscape with rich texture and color contrast.

Planting Instructions (From a 3.5" Pot into the Ground)

Transplant carefully to reduce shock and encourage quick establishment.

    1. Choose the Right Location

    • Select a spot with rich, well-draining but moisture-retentive soil.

    • Ensure 4–6+ hours of sunlight daily.

    2. Prepare the Soil

    • Loosen soil 10–12 inches deep.

    • Mix in compost or well-rotted manure — elephant ears are heavy feeders.

    3. Dig the Hole

    • Make the hole twice as wide as the 3.5" pot.

    • Depth should allow the plant to sit at the same soil level it was growing in the pot.

    4. Remove the Plant

    • Gently squeeze the pot and slide the plant out.

    • Loosen tightly circling roots if necessary.

    5. Plant

    • Place in the hole and backfill with amended soil.

    • Firm soil gently around the base.

    6. Water Thoroughly

    • Water deeply immediately after planting.

    • Keep soil evenly moist during establishment.

    7. Mulch

    • Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around (not touching) the stem to retain moisture.

    Overwintering Tropical Storm Elephant Ears

For Zones 3–7 (Dig and Store Tubers)

    1. Wait for First Frost: Foliage will yellow and collapse.

    2. Cut Back: Trim stems to 2–3 inches above soil.

    3. Dig Carefully: Lift tubers with a garden fork, avoiding damage.

    4. Dry (Cure): Let tubers dry 5–7 days in a warm, airy space.

    5. Store: Place in peat moss, sawdust, or vermiculite in a box.

      • Store at 40–55°F in a dry location.

      • Check monthly for rot.

    For Container Plants

    • Bring indoors before frost.

    • Place near bright light.

    • Reduce watering significantly during winter.

    For Zones 8–11

    • Cut back after foliage dies.

    • Apply 3–4 inches of mulch over root zone.

    • Ensure good drainage to prevent rot.

Tropical Storm Elephant Ears delivers dramatic tropical impact in a surprisingly manageable size. With proper moisture and winter care, it will return each season even more impressive than the last.
