Munstead Lavender is a classic English lavender variety prized for its compact growth, fragrant foliage, and abundant purple-blue flower spikes. Blooming from late spring into summer, this hardy perennial adds color, texture, and soothing fragrance to herb gardens, borders, and pollinator plantings. Its silvery-green foliage remains attractive even when not in bloom, and its compact habit makes it ideal for edging pathways and containers. Highly aromatic and easy to grow, Munstead is one of the most reliable lavenders for cooler climates.

Planting Instructions (From a 3.5" Pot into the Ground)

    1. Choose the Location

    • Select a sunny location with excellent drainage.
    • Ideal for herb gardens, borders, rock gardens, and pathways.

    2. Prepare the Soil

    • Loosen soil 8–10 inches deep.
    • Add sand or gravel if soil is heavy—lavender dislikes wet roots.

    3. Dig the Hole

    • Dig a hole twice as wide as the 3.5" pot and equal depth.

    4. Remove from Pot

    • Gently remove the plant and loosen any tightly bound roots.

    5. Plant

    • Place the plant so the top of the root ball sits slightly above soil level.
    • Backfill and firm soil gently.

    6. Water

    • Water thoroughly after planting.
    • Water regularly during establishment, then reduce frequency.

    7. Spacing

    • Space plants 18–24 inches apart for airflow and healthy growth.

    Overwintering Munstead Lavender

    In-Ground (Zones 5–9)

    • One of the more cold-hardy lavender varieties
    • Apply a light mulch layer around the base after the ground freezes
    • Avoid heavy winter moisture, which can cause root rot

    Maintenance Tips

    • Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape
    • Avoid cutting into old woody stems
    • Ensure excellent drainage throughout winter

    Container Plants

    • Move pots to a sheltered location during severe cold
    • Reduce watering during winter dormancy
    • Ensure containers drain well and do not remain waterlogged

Munstead Lavender is a timeless garden favorite that combines beauty, fragrance, and resilience. Its compact form, pollinator-friendly blooms, and drought tolerance make it an excellent choice for both ornamental and herb gardens.
