Lavandin ‘Fat Spike’ is a stunning hybrid lavender prized for its exceptionally large, densely packed flower spikes and intensely fragrant silver-green foliage. A cross between English Lavender and Portuguese Lavender, this vigorous variety combines outstanding heat tolerance with abundant blooms and one of the strongest fragrances among lavenders. From mid to late summer, tall stems topped with rich violet-purple flowers rise above mounded foliage, attracting bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Perfect for herb gardens, cottage gardens, borders, and cutting gardens, ‘Fat Spike’ is highly valued for fresh bouquets, dried arrangements, sachets, and essential oil production.

Planting Instructions (From a 3.5" Pot into the Ground)

    1. Choose the Location

    • Select a sunny location receiving at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
    • Choose an area with excellent air circulation and drainage.

    2. Prepare the Soil

    • Loosen soil 8–10 inches deep.
    • Amend heavy soils with sand, gravel, or compost to improve drainage.
    • Lavender thrives in slightly alkaline, well-drained soil.

    3. Dig the Hole

    • Dig a hole twice as wide as the 3.5" pot and equal depth.

    4. Remove from Pot

    • Carefully remove the plant and gently loosen any circling roots.

    5. Plant

    • Position the root ball slightly above the surrounding soil level if drainage is poor.
    • Backfill with soil and firm gently.

    6. Water Thoroughly

    • Water deeply after planting.
    • Allow soil to dry slightly between waterings during establishment.

    7. Mulch

    • Use gravel or small stone mulch around the base rather than organic mulch to improve drainage.

    8. Spacing

    • Space plants 24–36 inches apart to allow for mature growth and airflow.

    • Protect roots from repeated freeze-thaw cycles.
    • Water sparingly during winter dormancy.

    Winter Care Tips

    • Wait until spring to remove winter-damaged growth.
    • Lightly shape plants after flowering to maintain a compact form.
    • Avoid overwatering during cool weather.
