Northern Sea Oats (Chasmanthium latifolium) is an elegant, versatile ornamental grass known for its graceful, bamboo-like foliage and distinctive flat seed heads that dangle like delicate ornaments. Through summer, arching stems display bright green leaves and airy oat-like seed clusters that shimmer and rustle in the breeze. By fall, the seed heads mature to bronze and the foliage turns golden tan, adding rich seasonal interest. Adaptable and low-maintenance, this native grass thrives in a wide range of conditions, making it ideal for naturalized plantings, shade gardens, borders, or cut and dried arrangements.

Planting Instructions (from a 4" pot into the ground)

    1. Timing: Plant in spring after frost danger has passed or in early fall to allow roots to establish.

    2. Location: Choose a site with full sun to part shade and well-draining but moderately moist soil.

    3. Preparation: Dig a hole twice the width of the pot and equal in depth. Enrich poor soil with compost for best performance.

    4. Planting: Remove the plant from the pot, gently loosen roots, and place so the crown is level with the soil surface.

    5. Backfill: Refill hole with soil, firm gently, and water thoroughly to settle.

    6. Spacing: Space plants 24–30 inches apart for mature clump development.

    7. Aftercare: Water regularly during the first season to establish deep roots. Once mature, it needs only occasional watering during dry periods. Cut back to 3–6 inches above the ground in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges.

🌾 Northern Sea Oats brings graceful movement, multi-season interest, and reliable hardiness to gardens, performing beautifully in sun or shade while requiring very little care once established.
