Planting Instructions (From a 3.5" Pot into the Ground)

    1. Choose the Location

    • Select a warm, sunny, and sheltered location.
    • Protect from strong winds, which can tear leaves.

    2. Prepare the Soil

    • Loosen soil 10–12 inches deep.
    • Enrich with compost or organic matter—bananas prefer rich, well-drained soil.

    3. Dig the Hole

    • Dig a hole twice as wide as the 3.5" pot and slightly deeper.

    4. Remove from Pot

    • Gently remove the plant and loosen any circling roots.

    5. Plant

    • Place the plant so the root ball is level with or slightly below soil level.
    • Backfill and firm soil gently.

    6. Water

    • Water thoroughly after planting.
    • Keep soil consistently moist—bananas are heavy water users.

    7. Spacing

    • Space plants 6–10 feet apart depending on variety and desired density.

    Overwintering Musa Banana

    In-Ground (Zones 8–11)

    • May remain outdoors year-round
    • Leaves may be damaged by cold but regrow in spring
    • Apply mulch around the base to protect roots during cooler months

Cooler Climates (Zones 7 and Below)

    • After first frost, cut back foliage to 6–12 inches
    • Heavily mulch (6–12 inches) over the crown to protect roots
    • In colder regions, dig up rhizomes and store indoors

    Storage Method (Cold Climates)

    1. Dig up the plant after frost
    2. Trim leaves and roots slightly
    3. Allow to dry for a few days
    4. Store in a cool, dry place (40–50°F)

    Container Plants

    • Bring indoors before frost
    • Place in a bright location or allow dormancy in a cool space
    • Water lightly during winter
