When and How to Prune
- Remove spent flowers throughout the blooming season to encourage additional flowering.
- Leave some seed heads intact in late summer and fall to provide winter interest and food for birds.
- Cut stems back to 2–4 inches above the ground in late fall after frost or wait until late winter or early spring to enjoy the ornamental seed heads through winter.
- Remove any dead or damaged stems before new growth begins in spring.
Planting Instructions (3.5-Inch Pot into the Ground)
- Plant in spring or early fall when temperatures are mild.
- Choose a location with full sun and well-drained soil.
- Dig a hole twice as wide as the nursery pot and approximately the same depth.
- Carefully remove the plant from its 3.5-inch pot and gently loosen any circling roots.
- Position the plant so the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil.
- Backfill with native soil and gently firm around the roots.
- Water thoroughly after planting to eliminate air pockets.
- Space plants 18–24 inches apart to allow good air circulation and mature growth.
- Apply a 1–2 inch layer of mulch, keeping it a few inches away from the crown to reduce weeds while preventing excess moisture around the base.
- Water regularly during the first growing season until the plant becomes well established.
Overwintering Steps
- Supreme Flamingo Coneflower is fully hardy in USDA Zones 4–9 and naturally enters dormancy each winter.
- After the first hard frost, either leave the seed heads standing for winter wildlife and visual interest or cut stems back to 2–4 inches above the soil.
- Apply a 1–2 inch layer of mulch around the crown after the ground freezes to reduce freeze-thaw cycles, especially during the first winter after planting.
- Ensure the planting site has excellent drainage, as overly wet winter soil is more damaging than cold temperatures.
- Remove excess mulch in early spring as new shoots begin to emerge.
- Divide mature clumps every 4–5 years in spring if plants become overcrowded or flowering declines.
With its striking double flamingo-pink blooms, long flowering season, and exceptional pollinator appeal, Supreme Flamingo Coneflower adds bold color and texture to sunny gardens from summer through fall. Its outstanding drought tolerance, sturdy growth habit, and reliable perennial performance make it a beautiful, low-maintenance choice for borders, pollinator gardens, and fresh-cut flower arrangements year after year
