Concord Grape is the iconic American grape variety known for its deep purple fruit, bold aroma, and unmistakable sweet-tart flavor. Introduced in the mid-1800s, it quickly became the standard for grape juice, jelly, and fresh eating. This vigorous, cold-hardy vine produces medium to large clusters of richly colored grapes with juicy, slip-skin flesh and seeds. In addition to its heavy fruit production, Concord offers attractive, broad green foliage that turns golden in fall, making it both ornamental and productive in home gardens.

Planting Instructions (From a Gallon Pot into the Ground)

Plant in early spring after danger of hard frost has passed.

    1. Choose the Location

    • Select a sunny site with good airflow.

    • Avoid low areas where frost lingers.

    2. Prepare the Soil

    • Loosen soil 12–18 inches deep.

    • Ensure excellent drainage — grapes dislike soggy roots.

    • Amend with compost if needed, but avoid excessive nitrogen.

    3. Dig the Hole

    • Dig a hole twice as wide and slightly deeper than the gallon pot.

    • Set the plant so the top of the root ball is level with surrounding soil.

    4. Remove from Pot

    • Carefully remove the vine from its container.

    • Gently loosen any circling roots.

    5. Plant

    • Place in the hole and backfill firmly but gently.

    • Water thoroughly to settle soil.

    6. Provide Support

    • Install a sturdy trellis, arbor, or wire system at planting time.

    • Space vines 6–8 feet apart.

    7. Mulch

    • Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the base (keep mulch away from the trunk).

    Overwintering Concord Grape Vines

Concord grapes are very cold hardy but benefit from proper dormant care.

    Established In-Ground Vines (Zones 4–8)

    • Apply 2–3 inches of mulch in late fall around the root zone.

    • Prune during late winter while vines are fully dormant:

      • Remove old fruiting canes.

      • Select strong one-year-old canes for next season’s crop.

    • In colder Zone 4 climates, a slightly thicker mulch layer can provide extra root protection.

    First-Year Plants

    • Add extra mulch during the first winter.

    • Protect trunk from rodent damage with a tree guard if needed.

    Container-Grown Vines

    • Move to a sheltered location (garage or against the house).

    • Insulate container during extreme cold.

    • Keep soil slightly moist but never waterlogged.

Concord Grape Vines are a time-tested favorite, delivering rich flavor, dependable cold hardiness, and abundant harvests. With full sun, proper pruning, and sturdy support, they can produce generously for decades.
